American Gods is finally greenlit! Starz is moving forward with Neil Gaiman’s novel adaptation with Bryan Fuller and Michael Green as showrunners.

Since 2013, rumblings of an American Gods adaptation news shook Hollywood. Long gone are the days of the Tom Hanks, HBO collaboration, and here to stay, it seems, is the partnership between Bryan Fuller, Michael Green, Neil Gaiman, and Starz Network!

If you are unfamiliar with the novel written by Gaiman in 2001, American Gods follows the seemingly everyday man Shadow after he is released from prison and must attend his wife’s funeral. On his travels he encounters a man who refers to himself as Mr. Wednesday. There is a new type of battle brewing on the American front between the old and new gods. Mr. Wednesday, an old god who has lost his powers due to people’s shifting beliefs, is ready to face the new gods of money, fame, drugs, and technology with Shadow tagging along.

According to the release, the only thing tying up development is casting the perfect Shadow, Mr. Wednesday, and the rest of the book’s characters. With another one of Starz’s hit series, Outlander, hosting a panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, it is not a stretch to imagine that Starz will use some time to possibly announce some more news regarding the project. Perhaps even some early casting!

Here is what Gaiman had to say on the project:

I am thrilled, ‎scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation. The team that is going to bring the world of American Gods to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I’m relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura…

With only one 624 page book to go on, the series has the potential to move into more original work as it continues. Plus, you’ll be able to get a jumpstart on the series with only one book to tackle before the cameras start rolling!

At the moment, Bryan Fuller leads the pack in darker adaptations. Just take a look at what Fuller is doing with Hannibal on a network like NBC. Imagine what type of story the showrunner could tell on a network such as Starz!

This project has been a long time coming for both Fuller and Green, who jointly commented, “Almost 15 years ago, Neil Gaiman filled a toy box with gods and magic and we are thrilled to finally crack it open and play. We’re grateful to have STARZ above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise.”

Gaiman currently has another of his great works, Sandman in development with Batman vs. Superman writer David S. Goyer and director Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
