The American Gods credits are gorgeous, haunting, and a good indicator that the series will be the same way.

The American Gods opening credits blurs the lines between traditional and modern worship. The trippy journey through religion and modern temptation is the perfect lead-in for a series about blurring those lines. Honestly, would you expect anything less than a title sequence that is a perfect reflection of the series you are about to watch?

The imagery and the music blend the Gods of Old with the Gods of New. Syringes and space exploration appear alongside Buddha and the crucifixion. They couldn’t be more different, yet they come together at the end to form the totem pole of American Gods.

It is at its heart an immigration story. Stories of different people who worship different gods arrive in the melting pot of America. But over time they all lose their connections to their pasts.

They begin to tempt their faith and worship more modern entities — celebrity, technology, drugs. This is where the series will pick up its tale. As the Gods of Old fall out of sight and mind, Mr. Wednesday will urge them to take arms and fight to become relevant once again.

If you are excited about American Gods, you are not alone. The buzz around the series’ premiere is extremely positive thus far. Check out the first impressions of those in attendance at the world premiere at SXSW.
