Dylan O’Brien takes up the role of Mitch Rapp in the first teaser trailer for American Assassin, also starring Michael Keaton and Taylor Kitch.

No, we don’t know why a teaser trailer now comes in at 2 minutes and 27 seconds. What’s a full-length trailer, 5 minutes and 38 seconds? No matter. We’ll take all the Stiles Stilinski Dylan O’Brien we can get.

The trailer sets up the story pretty well. Mitch is at the beach with his girlfriend where he proposes to her, only for tragedy to strike in the form of a group of terrorists mowing down anyone in their way — including Mitch’s fiancee. With revenge on his mind, Mitch grows a beard and attempts to take down the cell himself.

It seems he’s unsuccessful, as we see him introduced to Michael Keaton’s character, Stan Hurley, who’s there to train him to become even better than he already is. Sanaa Lathan shows up to guide Mitch and convince Hurley he’s worth taking a chance on.

The plot seems fairly typical of an action-thriller, but the real draw here is seeing Teen Wolf and Maze Runner’s Dylan O’Brien taking on a legitimately adult role in what could potentially become a hugely successful franchise a la the Bourne films or even Mission Impossible.

What do you think of the first ‘American Assassin’ trailer starring Dylan O’Brien?
