Controversial comic book Preacher is headed to AMC, with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Breaking Bad writer Sam Catlin helming the adaptation series.

Preacher is a DC comic book series from the 1990s, written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Steve Dillon and Glenn Fabry.

The comics follow Texas-born Reverend Jesse Custer, who loses his faith after he is accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named Genesis.

After the destruction of his church and congregation, Jesse discovers that God has left heaven. Now, Jesse must travel across America, to track God down and bring him to justice.

There are also vampires, serial killers and alleged descendants of Jesus.

No wonder that This is the End duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have taken on this project, joined by Breaking Bad writer Sam Catlin, who will serve as showrunner on the series.

Catlin has written the pilot script, which has been greenlit for production by AMC and will be directed by Rogen and Goldberg.

In a statement, AMC exec Joel Stillerman expresses his enthusiasm for the project:

“Every once in a while you find a project where all the elements line up beautifully,” he says. “With Preacher, it starts with a bold, compelling, and thought-provoking comic book series … add to that the passionate and talented Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin … and we have everything we need to be very excited to move forward.”

Note that this doesn’t mean the show will make it to air, but hopefully the AMC execs will like the pilot enough to order more episodes!

The pilot will be produced in 2015, and is set to be released in 2016 if AMC decides to go ahead with the Preacher series.
