Major movie theater chain AMC has launched a surprisingly reasonable competitor to MoviePass.

The new subscription service is called AMC Stubs A-List, and for $19.95/month you can see up to three movies per week. A-List lets you see all three of your allotted movies in a single day, and you’re allowed to see the same movie more than once. You can also see movies in IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and RealD 3D formats.

AMC is guaranteeing this price for 12 months if you commit to three months in advance. You’ll also receive 10% back on food and drink, complimentary popcorn and drink upgrades, and priority access at the concessions stand.

This, in my opinion, is the best deal yet. Though MoviePass is cheaper and let’s you see a movie a day, there are serious questions about the company’s longterm viability. It is also limited to 2D screenings, and you can’t see a movie more than once.

A-List, on the other hand, is backed by America’s biggest theater chain. Three movies per week is more than enough movies, and the $20 price tag is perfectly fair. You can sign up for AMC Stubs A-List beginning June 26.

AMC’s offer makes Cinemark’s Movie Club look like a joke. Announced a few months ago, the subscription service costs $8.99/month for one movie a month. Additional movies are $8.99 per film. You also receive 20% off concessions and buy additional tickets for friends and family for $8.99.

AMC and other movie theaters have been vocal about their distaste for MoviePass. They believe the absurdly low rate is conditioning moviegoers to low prices. If MoviePass ever goes under, customers might have a hard time switching back to paying $10+ per movie. I might seriously consider switching to A-List even before MoviePass goes under.
