The Nicolas Cage-led Joe Exotic drama has found its home at Amazon!

Coming up next, Nicolas Cage will find himself stepping into the shoes of Joe Exotic— the eccentric exotic zookeeper who many were first introduced to as part of Netflix’s hit documentary series, Tiger King.

The forthcoming series, which is based on the Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild” by Leif Reigstad, was first announced back in May.

At the time, we learned that Reigstad’s article was optioned by Paul Young and American Vandal showrunner Dan Laguna, but despite touting Nicolas Cage as its star, the series had yet to find a place to call home. Enter Amazon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Studios swooped in and announce on Thursday (September 10) that they had officially signed on to develop the scripted series from CBS Television Studios and Imagine. In addition, Amazon Studios will also produce on the project.

The Amazon Studios project will center on Joe Schreibvogel (a.k.a Joe Exotic)— an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma fighting to keep his park even at the risk of losing his sanity. In addition, the show also promises to explore how Joe became Joe Exotic, in addition to delving into how he eventually lost himself to a character of his own creation.

Nicolas Cage will star as Joe Exotic on the series, in addition to serving as an executive producer on the project.

Others involved behind the camera include American Vandal’s Dan Lagana and Empire’s Brian Grazer, who will split showrunner and executive producer duties. In addition, Samie Kim Flavey, Paul Young, Scott Brown, and Megan Creydt will all serve as producers on the project as well.

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect the eight-episode scripted series to debut via Amazon Prime.
