Amazon is bringing Middle Earth to the small screen, and according to reports, the story will follow the younger years of everyone’s favorite Dúnedain ranger, Aragorn.

Lord of the Rings fans have been curious to find out just what awaited them in Amazon’s series set in Middle Earth. Would it be a retelling of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (please no) or would it be stories from Tolkien’s appendices focusing on greater Middle Earth? According to reports that have come from SlashFilm and TheOneRing.net, Amazon’s series will focus on stories from Middle Earth that haven’t yet been adapted into films.

Specifically, the series is reported to follow the younger years of Aragorn. There’s a pretty rich vein of storytelling available here, especially with the huge efforts Aragorn’s parents went through in order to hide his true identity.

If the reports are true, we could get a first-row seat into how Aragorn’s mother, Gilraen, worked hard to hide Aragorn, we could see some of his time living with Elrond in Rivendell, and we could explore Aragorn’s many different aliases from Estel to Thorongil to Strider. Not to mention the fact that his story could also highlight the early days of his romance with Arwen and how he became the Chieftan of the Rangers of the North (the Dúnedain).

With such huge financial investment on Amazon’s part, it makes sense that reports are surfacing which pin the series squarely on Aragorn’s shoulders. Not only does Aragorn have a rich life to pull adventurous stories from, but his life is so deeply entrenched in the political, ever-changing landscape of Middle Earth that it’d be a totally immersive story right from the jump. New, old, casual, and hardcore fans of Tolkien alike will be able to find an entry point into the story.

We have to wait for an official confirmation from Amazon to be certain this is indeed where the series will go, but the choice makes perfect sense and would basically be a slam dunk for Amazon. We’ll keep watching for more news to break on the series, and will keep you posted on new Lord of the Rings series developments.
