Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb has been confirmed to be on board for the third Spider-Man film. Sony also reveals they plan to release one Spider-Man movie per year.

In a recent report from Variety, it’s been confirmed that Marc Webb will be directing Amazing Spider-Man 3. While it was assumed that Webb would finish up the trilogy, what’s more interesting is that Sony is planning to release one Spider-Man film per year.

While we know from earlier reports back in late 2013 that the fourth film in the Spider-Man franchise may include Venom or the Sinister Six, it’s ambitious of Sony to plan on releasing one Spider-Man film each year.

It could become difficult for Sony to keep audiences interested in a Spider-Man film every year.

Something Marvel has been successful doing is alternating main characters in their own solo films, which most likely prevents audiences from becoming burned out.

If villains get their own standalone films, will audiences even consider them Spider-Man films? We’re unsure, but Andrew Garfield has said that he’s only signed on for three films right now and it’s unclear if he’d even be interested in signing a contract that would extend his stay as Peter Parker until at least 2018.

Something else to keep in mind is that Sony plans to release Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2016, which gives us two years in between the third film’s release date and Amazing Spider-Man 2. They would have to release two additional films that haven’t been announced yet, making it difficult to complete their goal of one film a year.

It could be the studio’s intention to start the one film a year method after The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is released in 2016, but that would mean we wouldn’t see anything until at least mid 2017.

Sony may be biting off more than they can chew with this plan, but The Amazing Spider-Man pulled in $752 million at the worldwide box office, and Sony intends on riding this gravy train until it stops. They’ve hit the jackpot with two highly talented stars and a popular superhero, so we don’t blame them.

For now, we’ll just continue to be excited for the highly anticipated The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is heading to theaters May 2, 2014.
