The world of Netflix’s Altered Carbon is expanding with an upcoming anime film that comes from Cowboy Bebop creator Dai Sato.

The anime feature spin-off is set on the planet Latimer and will follow a resleeved Takeshi Kovacs as he fights to protect a tattooist while also investigating the death of a yakuza boss alongside a no-nonsense CTAC.

There’s no word yet on whether the show is meant to be a prequel, sequel or to fill in the gaps between the first and second season. However, we do know that Altered Carbon: Resleeved will be set in the same universe of the Netflix original live-action sci-fi series and will explore new elements of the story mythology.

The anime film hails from Dai Satō of Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex fame, and is directed by Jō Nakajima from a script co-written by Sato and Tsukasa Kondo. The film adaptation is a production by Japanese animated studio Anima.

Based on the 2002 Richard K. Morgan novel of the same name, Altered Carbon takes place in a future in which death has essentially been defeated. Technology has allowed the human consciousness to be uploaded to a chip called a stack, which had made it possible for individuals to transfer their consciousness to new bodies called sleeves, thereby allowing them live on for as long as their money can sustain them.

The series follows Takeshi Kovacs, the only surviving soldier of a group of elite interstellar warriors, as he’s transferred into different sleeves and tasked with solving the murders of the wealthy elite, all while pursuing his own agenda and mysteries.

The first season of Altered Carbon saw Joel Kinnaman in the role of the resleeved Takeshi, with MCU star Anthony Mackie stepping into the role for the second season.

Altered Carbon: Resleeved will premiere on Netflix on March 19.
