Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales rebooted the franchise, with Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow pairing up with Will and Elizabeth’s son. But could they ever do an all-female reboot?

A crew of female pirates raising hell on the seven seas and filling the hearts of British Empire soldiers with fear and reverence? Sign us the. eff. up.

While Dead Men Tell No Tales could ostensibly be seen as an ending to the saga, it is evident that there’s still some money to be made from the theme park ride-turned-blockbuster, and it only makes sense to consider possible spinoffs, sequels, prequels, and whatever the heck Disney might use to expand their ‘Pirates Cinematic Universe.’

Kaya Scodelario, who joined the cast of Dead Men Tell No Tales as Elizabeth Swann 2.0 Carina Smyth, recently revealed to Screen Rant that she’s contracted for another Pirates movie, and while this could easily just be a direct continuation of the story as it stood at the end of Tales, the Maze Runner star has other plans:

“Well, when I signed up for the first one, I signed up for two movies. So I am contractually obliged, but I’d love to [do it]. I think there’s a lot we can still do. I’d like see a Carina who takes the helm of Barbossa on the sea – have her own all-female pirate crew.”

Could you imagine? An all-female pirate movie would certainly be a new twist on the male-dominated genre, and it’s not like there aren’t historical figures to draw on — Anne Bonny, Queen Teuta and Ching Shih chief among them — for an instalment of the Pirates franchise which might actually spark some renewed interest in the series.

Of course it’s one of those brilliant ideas that Hollywood won’t ever actually go for… but then again, we are getting an all-female Lord of the Flies, which pretty much means that anything is possible.
