The Alien 5 movie is really happening. But although Sigourney Weaver will reprise her role, it’ll reboot the series… sort of.

Sigourney Weaver is gearing up to play Ripley once again, for Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5.

In an interview with Sky Movies, Blomkamp has revealed that the fifth movie, interestingly, will pick up where the second movie left off.

“I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens. So it’s Alien, Aliens, this movie,” he explains

So it’s really the third movie? Should it be Alien 3.2? We’re a little lost on the math here.

But while it seems like a bizarre move, maybe it’s for the best that Blomkamp is disregarding the fourth and fifth movie to get a second pass at finishing out Ripley’s story.

To recap, the first two movies in the franchise, Alien and Aliens, were directed by Ridley Scott and James Cameron respectively. They followed Ripley’s explorations of the alien planet, and the second film ends with Ripley, Newt, Hicks and Bishop returning to Earth.

So when Alien 5 picks up, Newt’s still alive. And more importantly, Ripley hasn’t been impregnated by an alien, died, and been resurrected via cloning 200 years later – a bizarre series of twists which we doubt anyone would mind being overwritten by new canon.

As Blomkamp explains, “It’s a great series. It deserves a proper ending. I know the fans would love that. So I hope it works out.”
