Alicia Vikander has found her next leading role in a new HBO limited series loosely based on the 1996 French film, Irma Vep.

HBO announced today (December 14) that it has given the green light to a brand new limited series set to star and be executive produced by Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander.

Titled Irma Vep, the forthcoming limited series is being written and directed by Paris, je t’aime scribe Olivier Assayas.

If the title sounds familiar, that’s because it is. The upcoming limited siege is actually loosely based off of Assayas’ 1996 feature film of the same name.

Irma Vep will find Vikander taking on the role of Mira— an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who comes to France to star as “Irma Vep” in a remake of the French silent film classic, Les Vampires.

Set against the backdrop of a lurid crime thriller, Mira struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge. Irma Vep reveals to us the uncertain ground that lies at the border of fiction and reality, artifice and authenticity, art and life.

In a statement announcing her involvement with the project, Alicia Vikander spoke of how much she’s looking forward to working with the French director.

“I have been a long-time admirer of Olivier and his work. I am very excited for us to work together, and to be a part of the expanded universe of his superb cult classic, Irma Vep,” said the Tomb Raider star. “There are a lot of brilliant people coming together and I am delighted to be partnering with HBO and A24 one this special project.”

Meanwhile, in a statement of his own Assayas said that he’s looking forward to expand Irma Vep into a series format.

“This is a comedy that will try and catch the zeitgeist the same way the original Irma Vep did, in a very different world, a very different era, that right now feels lightyears away,” said Assayas.

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect to see Irma Vep debut via HBO.
