Tomb Raider has found its new Lara Croft, and her name is Alicia Vikander.

The actress won the coveted role in a battle against Star Wars: The Force Awakens lead Daisy Ridley. According to Variety, “Vikander always seemed to be in the driver seat [and] the reason for a delay in the offer had to do with waiting for a new draft of the script to be delivered to the studio.”

Two Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina Jolie were released in 2001 and 2003, while the video game series launched in 1996 for Sega Saturn, MS-DOS, and PlayStation. Different installments of the game have been on virtually every video game console since then. Over 45 million copies of Tomb Raider have reportedly been sold since its debut two decades ago.

As we previously told you, the reboot will focus on 2013’s Tomb Raider video game, which showed Lara Croft as an archaeology student for the first time. This will not be a retelling of what we saw in Angelina Jolie’s movies, but rather a look into her past when she was still learning her craft. The first installment of the reboot video game franchise saw Lara on her inaugural mission, with the followup game, Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), taking place a year later.

We here at Hypable were personally gunning for Daisy Ridley to take the part because we thought she’d have been perfect for the role. But Vikander seems like a great choice, too!

Alicia Vikander is known for her roles in The Danish Girl and Ex Machina. She’ll also appear in the new Jason Bourne hitting theaters later this year.
