Could you imagine a world where the cult classic teen rom-com Clueless didn’t exist? If you think we’re totally bugging’ for even suggesting the idea, think again!

Actress Alicia Silverstone, who brought the iconic Cher Horowitz to life in the ’90s rom-com, recently sat down for a candid interview with Variety. During the chat, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid actress revealed that Clueless almost didn’t get made because it kept getting turned down by studios.

“One studio said no to it,” Silverstone told Variety. “Those people now kick themselves that they were not part of that film. They were like, ‘We don’t think anybody is going to care. It’s not going to sell tickets.’”

So why were so many in Hollywood unconvinced that Clueless could be a mega hit at the box office? According to Silverstone, naysayers were under the impression that no one would be interested in Cher’s story.

“They didn’t think that anyone was interested in watching a movie about a young girl,” explained Silverstone.

Oh how wrong they were.

Clueless might have premiered in theaters over 20 years ago, but there’s no denying the film, which was written and directed by Amy Heckerling, has cemented its place in pop culture history. Additionally, there’s no denying Clueless paved the way for so many other teen rom-coms that have come after it.

In fact, Siverstone went on to say that the lasting impression Clueless has made on fans of all ages over the years was recently put into perspective when she attended a special screening of the film at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

“We were laying under the stars…and all these people— 4,000 people came to watch this movie and the tickets sold out [so fast]…and that’s why I went,” explained Silverstone. “It was an incredible thing.”

We think we speak for Clueless fans far and wide when we say we’re happy Paramount took a chance on the film and made sure it made it to theaters everywhere!
