A week after the report first surfaced, Alfonso Cuarón says he won’t be directing the Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

While he didn’t deny that he had been in talks with Warner Bros. to helm the project like last week’s report suggested, Cuarón says in a new interview that he’s not interested in Fantastic Beasts due to the fact that it’s CGI-heavy.

“[Directing Prisoner of Azkaban] was a very beautiful experience for me,” he said in comments obtained by Digital Spy. “I have a lot of love for that universe and I tremendously admire J.K. Rowling, but today, for the present, projects based around lots of visual effects don’t attract me. I’m coming out of a five-year process of doing visual effects and now I sort of want to clean my palate of that a little bit.”

Cuarón had helmed 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and after working with series producer David Heyman on Gravity last year, it seemed like a natural fit for him.

Whether or not you liked the idea of Cuarón directing, everyone can agree his thought process to come to this decision is admirable. Committing to a green screen world right after Gravity would be mind numbing, so we completely understand why he wants his next project to be less fantastical.

Maybe he’ll be more interested in the second Fantastic Beasts movie (remember, it’s a trilogy).

Warner Bros. has set a November 2016 release date for Fantastic Beasts, penned by J.K. Rowling, so we won’t be surprised if a director is confirmed in the near future.

Hypable conducted a poll last week, which found that 89% of our readers were in favor of the idea of Cuarón directing.

Now who do you think should direct ‘Fantastic Beasts’?

Should Warner Bros. jump into the pool of existing Potter directors like Chris Columbus, Mike Newell, or David Yates, or should the series look elsewhere?
