While promoting his new film Good Night at South by Southwest, Girls co-star Alex Karpovsky, who plays Ray on the show, indulged that his character’s relationship will go “in a more disconcerting place than it’s gone before.” Catch a preview of the season finale here, too!

Karpovsky hinted that Girls’ season 2 finale “goes deeper and darker” for Ray and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), whose relationship was shaken up in episode eight when Shosh had an inpromtu hookup with a doorman.

In regards to Ray’s relationship in the season finale, Karpovsky told The Hollywood Reporter, “I think he learned a tremendous amount about himself and her in the last two episodes [of the season].”

He went on to say that Ray’s character ends Girls’ second season “in a place that’s very moving, surprising, and for [him], very illuminating.”

For us, Karpovsky’s comments aren’t a huge surprise. It seems that Shoshanna and Ray’s formerly-stable relationship has been going in a tailspin these last few episodes of season 2.

In episode nine, “On All Fours,” Shoshanna remains untruthful with Ray. When asked why she was being so distant and anxious, Shoshanna admitted that she merely “held the doorman’s hand,” to which Ray hugs her affectionately and again admits how much he loves her.

“On All Fours” also saw the rest of the Girls characters spiraling downward; Marnie sings a wincingly embarrassing version of “Stronger” at Charlie’s workplace party. Hannah’s OCD continues to consume her life, landing her a trip to the hospital when she shoves a Q-tip just a smidge too far into her ear. And Adam – our most favorite Adam! – takes up alcohol again to impress new-girlfriend Natalia, ending in a crude sex scene that upsets Natalia quite a bit.

Tune in to the season finale of Girls airing at 9 p.m. on HBO this Sunday, March 17. Watch a preview of the episode below:

Episode 2×10’s synopsis for “Together” is:

To avoid being sued by her publisher, Hannah must write her book in a single day. Marnie misinterprets Charlie’s intentions; Ray makes a career move that he hopes will impress Shoshanna.
