Aladdin will be back for another live-action adventure — and it won’t be one that we’ve ever seen before!

Disney’s live-action adaptations of their greatest animated films have been one box office hit after another, with last year’s Aladdin being no exception.

Disney’s fourth live-action adaptation made over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office against a $183 million budget, and went on to become the highest-grossing release of all time in the Middle East.

With that kind of success behind it, it isn’t too much of a surprise that — according to a report by Variety — an Aladdin sequel film is in the works.

According to sources for Variety, the film is already in early development. Producers have spent the last six months trying to figure out what direction they would like to take the Aladdin follow-up and have recently found their way.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the original, will return to produce, with Ryan Halprin executive producing, though it’s unknown at this time whether Guy Ritchie — the director of the first film — will likewise be returning to helm this follow-up feature.

Producers do hope to bring back the stars of the first film — Will Smith, who took on the task of following Robin Williams performance as the Genie, Mena Massoud as titular pauper-turned-prince, and Naomi Scott as rebellious Princess Jasmine. However, no offers will be made to the cast until a script is ready.

And though Disney does have plans to do so for other films, Aladdin won’t be a Disney+ title but will be a theatrical release. This will put it on a different path than the original, animated Aladdin, which spawned two direct-to-video sequels, The Return of Jafar and Aladdin: King of Thieves. According to Variety, this new live-action sequel will be a completely original take that won’t be based on either of those films.
