Disney Theatrical Productions announced today that Aladdin will be the next beloved film brought to Broadway beginning in spring of next year!

Were they listening to our article published last week, in which we requested Aladdin be a priority?

A stage production based on Aladdin currently runs at Disney’s California Adventure theme park in the west, but never has the story been told at a prestigious Broadway location.

Aladdin will get a tryout beginning this November in Toronto, Canada for nine weeks. According to The New York Times, the show “will feature songs, scenes, illusions, and a flying carpet that were not part of the show’s world premiere production in Seattle in 2011.” In 2014 it will move to Broadway and run at the New Amsterdam Theater where Disney’s Mary Poppins currently resides.

Arriving with the show will be a new song titled “Proud of Your Boy” which was cut from the animated film but can be heard below in this behind-the-scenes look from Disney. In this version, the song is performed by film composer Alan Menken. It is sung by Aladdin in the story and is a message to his mother, who was cut from the film (and thus the song had to go too). The inclusion of this song indicates his mother will be added to the Broadway production.

Disney released the following teaser art and opened this Twitter account:

Notably, Casey Nicholaw – who was one of the directors on the runaway Broadway hit The Book of Mormon – will choreograph and direct.

Very exciting news for Disney fans, and we can’t wait for next year!
