AHS‘s attempts to bring Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka onto the show have failed since the first season. Announced today, the couple are finally set to appear in guest roles later in the Freak Show installment!

The first offer from Ryan Murphy came via tweet following an EW Radio interview with renaissance man, Neil Patrick Harris who mentioned, “I just love those series and Coven was fantastic… to do one that involves any kind of freak, circus nonsense is going to be so unsettling to watch.”

@ActuallyNPH of course you can be on Freak Show! I have a role I think you’d love.

Today, we learned that Ryan Murphy and Neil Patrick Harris were able to make a deal and the former How I Met Your Mother star will be bringing along husband David Burtka to the New Orleans set. According to TV Line’s report, “Harris will appear in Freak Show‘s final two episodes as a chameleon salesman, while Burtka will turn up in the season finale in what I’m told is a sexy story line with Jessica Lange’s batty chanteuse.”

Harris was not shy when it came to offering his input on what the role would entail. Back when the first intallment of the show was in production, Murphy asked Harris and Burtka to be a part of Murder House, but the couple turned the role down. The production came right after the couple wrapped playing a fictionalized version of themselves who hated each other in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. The roles instead went to Zachary Quinto and Teddy Sears.

Harris is certainly setting quite the tight schedule for himself following his departure of Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway. He has since released his first book, Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography, been chosen to host the 2015 Oscars, and NBC picked up a variety show series with Harris as the host!

This is not Harris’ first role under the leadership of Mr. Murphy. He previously appeared on Glee as Bryan Ryan, a role that landed him a best guest actor in a comedy series Emmy award.
