Life got flipped, turned upside-down on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 1, episode 3. Here’s everything you need to know about “The Asset.”

Here’s what happened on tonight’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

– Skye has apparently decided to become a field agent. (Congratulations, Agent Ward.)
– Gravitonium is a thing.
– Truth serum is not. (Sorry, Skye.)
– Dr. Franklin Hall is kidnapped by Ian Quinn, one of those brilliant, sleazy TV millionaires who pursue money and science with equal abandon.
– When the team decides to rescue Hall, Skye takes matter into her own hands and scores an invite to Quinn’s shmancy party, so she can open the Fence of Electronic Death with makeup.
– Or something.
– Ward doesn’t think Skye should be their mole because she hadn’t commited herself to S.H.I.E.L.D. yet (and because he’s totally into her) but Coulson goes along with it.
– The rescue goes down smoothly at first, with May, FitzSimmons and popcorn guiding Skye through the party.
– But when Quinn expresses interest in Skye’s services, it looks like she may be betraying the team.
– Yikes.
– Fortunately, Skye isn’t impressed by Quinn and does her makeup magic. Fitz turns off the Fence of Electronic Death, and Coulson is able to get to Dr. Hall.
Unfortunately, Dr. Hall arranged his own kidnapping so he could destroy the gravitonium – along with Quinn’s entire compound.
– It’s all very darkly noble, but Coulson has a vested interest in keeping innocent people alive, so after a little super-gravitational philosophy, he drops Hall into the gravitonium to stabilize it.
– Or something.
– Back on the Bus, Skye decides to dedicate herself to S.H.I.E.L.D.
– And in his brand new vault apartment, Dr. Franklin Hall – or something that used to be Dr. Franklin Hall – begins to emerge from the roiling ooze of the gravitonium.
– Uh-oh.

On the emotional side of things, we also learned that:

– Agent Ward was inspired to do field work through protecting his little brother from his nasty bigger brother who liked cake a little too much.
-Skye was a home-bouncing foster-child.
– Agent May can have an entire emotional arc using just her face and like, seven words, the upshot of which is that we should forget all that stuff she said about not working in the field, because it’s so last week.
