Coulson is dead… so long live Coulson? Clark Gregg weighs in on his new role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6.

The astonishing new trailer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 revealed more than one shocking development. But the major punch to the fandom’s gut came in the final moments, when the apparently-dead Phil Coulson made a reappearance… claiming never to have heard of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Clark Gregg spoke to Marvel about his newest incarnation, offering a few bedeviling teases that are sure to leave fans debating his meaning. But hey, this is life with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — we never know exactly what’s around the next corner, and even if we did, we’d never believe it.

Aside from joking about his status as the un-killable “cockroach” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (“Every time I think I’m out, they drag me back in!” he laughs) Gregg says that he will be playing “a non-Coulson role” when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 returns.

“I suddenly find myself playing this other, very mysterious person who is not Phil Coulson,” he says, calling the experience “Strange.” (Hmm… Doctor Strange-related, perhaps? Or are we reaching here?) In any case, Gregg seems confident that fans will not be disappointed in the eventual revelation of his character’s new identity.

“The mystery of who that person is and why he looks like that is something that they’ve done groundbreaking, wild stuff with,” he says, “That I’m really lucky to play.”
