ABC released their full schedule today, and revealed that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 will return rather later than expected.

According to EW, ABC president Channing Dungey announced today that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 will air in Summer 2019.

After several days of hanging in limbo, ABC renewed the Marvel series for a 13-episode sixth season yesterday. Many fans assumed that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 would serve as a mid-season replacement and lead into the second part of Avengers: Infinity War.

Instead, the shortened season will serve as a follow up to Avengers 4, positioning the show to bring to life the street-level aftermath of those surely-collosal events.

With the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 finale (ironically titled “The End”) airing on Friday, May 18, fan speculation has reached a fever-pitch over whether the catastrophic conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War will be portrayed on the small screen. Whether or not this is the case (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. seems to be setting itself early on in the film’s timeline so far) it’s clear that Thanos’ power will have an indelible effect on the show as it continues. Channing Dungey remarked that she has no knowledge of if or how Infinity War will come into play on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6.

But fans despondent over the unexpectedly long wait for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s return can take heart in at least one piece of news: Though the series has been renewed for a limited number of episodes, Dungey also noted that ABC is not approaching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 as its final season. So while the wait may be long, the future may also be bright for the Marvel series’ small but active fanbase.

Assuming the Earth doesn’t explode this week, that is.

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 finale, “The End,” airs Friday, May 18 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
