Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 4×09 airs tonight! Here’s what to expect from the mid-season premiere.

Tonight’s episode, titled “Broken Promises,” marks the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from its winter hiatus. The subtitle for this story segment is “LMD,” and Radcliffe’s android Aida is about to take center stage.

In the December finale, Robbie Reyes defeated his Darkhold-drunk uncle Eli by convincing the Ghost Rider to pull him down to Hell. (Or… somewhere.) Daisy rejoined S.H.I.E.L.D. after Mace publicly vouched for her, Mack and Elena got together, and FitzSimmons were as adorable as usual.

Finally, Aida murdered Agent Nathanson when he discovered that she had replaced Agent May with a Life Model Decoy, who was at that very moment making goo-goo eyes at Coulson.

The synopsis for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 4×09 springboards off that final revelation.

“Though Coulson and May are growing closer, Coulson remains unaware of the dark secret May is hiding beneath the surface,” ABC says. “Meanwhile, Aida is unrelenting in her search for the Darkhold.”

Also to come in “Broken Promises” are further developments with Senator Nadeer, and one or two entirely unexpected fight scenes. Clips released from tonight’s episode focus on the high points — Aida’s new empowerment, and the Darkhold itself.

See, now that looks like very compelling evidence not to update my computer.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s winter hiatus wasn’t entirely gloomy, though. ABC offered up “Slingshot” during the break, a six-episode miniseries that focused some much-needed attention on Yo-Yo Rodriguez. Actress Natalia Cordova-Buckley spoke with Hypable about the series, and shared a few insights on the production and process of “Slingshot.”

Moving forward, it looks like the pattern of hiatuses (hiatusi?) will be repeating later this season on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. At the Television Critic’s Association press conference, showrunner Jed Whedon said that the story of season 4 has divided into three segments.

“It’s based on our schedule of how we’re airing,” he said. “We like to run continuous, if that [is] possible, so this next chunk will be a section and then we’ll be off for a while and there’ll be a third part.”

Fingers crossed for the return of Ghost Rider… and another mini-series in between!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 4×09, “Broken Promises,” airs tonight at 10 p.m. on ABC.
