New promotional material for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere promise Ghost Rider, dead Directors, and “big steps forward.”

The premiere episode, titled “The Ghost,” will debut Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in its new 10 p.m. slot. “The Ghost” seems like a fitting name for an episode that will introduce the mystical Ghost Rider — but we can’t help but wonder if the title might also refer to the missing Daisy Johnson.

The official synopsis for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere has more on its mind than flaming skulls and AWOL agents, however. ABC’s synopsis reveals that radical changes have taken place in the public’s perception of S.H.I.E.L.D. — and of those who run it.

“In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows,” ABC says. “Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director to be the face of the organization.”

In his everything-old-is-new-again job description, ABC says that the former Director will resume a familiar beat.

“Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack, and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans.”

Meanwhile, other member of the crew are also busy, but not necessarily together.

“Agent May is tasked with training specialist strike teams,” ABC says, “and Fitz and Simmons have taken a big step forward in their relationship.”

(Like snorkeling?)

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere synopsis is completely mum on the subject of Daisy, but it does drop one ominous reference to the Spirit of Vengeance.

“Ghost Rider is coming,” the network promises, “and S.H.I.E.L.D will never be the same.”

The still photos from “The Ghost” don’t offer many more clues. Four of the five images are of May and Mack together… and then May and Mack separately — plus mood lighting and a familiar pair of specs.

But the last still gives us an even closer look at Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes — very soon to be known (and perhaps loved, or else maybe feared) as Ghost Rider.

Just look at that demonically-posessed cutie pie.

Guest-starring along with Luna are Natalia Cordova-Buckley as the inimitable (and uncatchable) Yo-Yo Rodriguez, Mallory Jansen as the mysterious Aida, and Lilli Birdsell as Lucy. Interestingly, it seems we may have to wait for more information on Jason O’Mara’s nameless new Director.

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere, “The Ghost,” airs on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 10:00 p.m. on ABC.
