Actress Lilli Birdsell is joining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 in a recurring role that may signal danger for our intrepid agents.

According to Deadline, Birdsell will play a character named Lucy, who is described as “a beautiful woman with a haunting quality.” Birdsell has appeared on The Walking Dead, and How To Get Away With Murder. Her character will apparently have “a very violent streak in her inner self;” getting really specific, the description mentions that Lucy’s brutality is due to “things that have happened.”

Ah, yes. The things.

Such vagaries, naturally, demand a strong dose of speculation. Call us crazy, but Lucy doesn’t exactly sound like your standard, run-of-the-mill human female, does she? While it’s more than possible that Birdsell will be playing an Inhuman, we can’t help but wonder if the character will have ties to the supernatural side of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

As showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon recently teased at San Diego Comic-Con, the series will keep introduce elements of magic and spirituality in season 4, keeping in step with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s forthcoming Doctor Strange.

That magical side is set to be represented by the highly-anticipated introduction of Robbie Reyes — a new version of Marvel’s revered Ghost Rider, played by Gabriel Luna. Clearly spiritual possession is already on the table for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4, so perhaps the adjective “haunting” can be taken literally.

It’s also interesting to see that violence is specifically noted in Lilli Birdsell’s character description. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn’t exactly pulling its dramatic punches last year, but the move to 10 p.m. may allow for an even darker tone as the once-cheery series continues to evolve.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 10p.m. on ABC.
