Chloe Bennett teases Hypable about the implications of Daisy’s dark mindset and dark hair in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4.

As the epilogue to season 3 suggested, serious changes will have rippled through the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when the new season begins on Sept. 20. Jason O’Mara’s character has stepped in as the new Director, Simmons’ is enjoying her latest round of alienation from the team, and of course, Ghost Rider is now a thing.

But it’s Daisy Johnson who has experienced the most extreme and, shall we say, tectonic shift among the assembled cast. (Yes, you can groan, it’s okay.) Reeling from Lincoln’s death, Daisy has adopted a new hairstyle — Chloe Bennett calls the look “dark” and “dramatic” — that reflects her current emotional state.

“She’s in a darker place, she’s mourning,” says Bennett. “She’s been through so much that she feels like she is protecting them but kind of pushing them away, because she feels like everything bad happens around her, and she can’t help but cause the problems.”

According to Bennett, Daisy (now known to the public as the chaos-causing Quake) views her isolation as “her way of taking care of the people she cares about.”

This mechanism “isn’t the best thing, [I] don’t think it’s going to last long-term,” Bennett says. “But… she’s really sad.”

The actress says that fans can expect a few exhilarating moments from Daisy in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 — she hints at more “flopping,” the kickass hopping-flying move she displayed in the epilogue to season 3. But expanding her powers may be a double-edged sword for the earth-shaking Inhuman.

“I’m not being monitored by S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Bennett says. “At every step of the way through my transformation as an Inhuman, it’s been monitered by FitzSimmons and kind of containing and helping me grow my powers.”

“And so I think you’ll see the repercussions of her using these new powers and abusing them, in a way. Kind of abusing her body. And so physically, she’s in not great shape when we first see her in the first episode. She’s not going to be doing well.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 10:00 p.m. on ABC.
