Welsh actor Andrew Howard has joined the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 as a character certain to make waves.

Howard will play an agent called Banks, a character described as “authoritative and intimidating.” The role will be a recurring one, and is suggested to be crucial in upcoming events.

Andrew Howard has had recent roles on Bates Motel and Elementary, in addition to several other television series. He also appeared in the films Taken 3 and The Hangover: Part II.

The character of Banks has no apparent precedent in Marvel Comics, suggesting that his role has been invented for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3. It is not specified whether or not Howard’s character is an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., or perhaps belongs to another protective faction. As Howard is Welsh, it is possible that Banks is an agent representing of the U.K. — though he could just as easily be playing an American character.

These pesky actors and their sneaky talents!

Howard is the first new actor to join the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 — though a new female counterpart to Director Coulson has also been hinted at. Precious few other hints have been disclosed about the plot of the new season, even at San Diego Comic-Con, but we do know that Chloe Bennet will be rocking a new haircut as she takes on the mantle of Daisy Johnson.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 begins on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
