The epic second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will conclude with a super-sized finale that promises major changes.

The two-hour finale, titled “S.O.S. Part 1” and “S.O.S. Part 2,” will air in on May 12. The synopsis for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 finale does not skimp on the ominous turns of phrase in describing the episode.

“S.H.I.E.L.D. puts everything on the line to survive a war that blurs the line between friend and foe,” ABC promises. “Coulson and his team will be forced to make shocking sacrifices that will leave their relationships and their world changed forever.”

We’d give you a paper bag to breathe into, but this is the internet.

Still, everyone knows that networks love to hyperbolize — especially where season finales are concerned. It’s almost ironic to read about the team’s world being “changed forever” when massive, permanent changes (such as Hydra, Inhumans, and Other-S.H.I.E.L.D.) have become practically de rigueur on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In addition, the language of complications between “friend and foe” has certainly been used before — though the idea of blurring lines certainly sticks out. Is it at all possible that the long-dormant thread of brainwashing will come to the forefront again? Does that tie in to the suggestion of “shocking sacrifices”? Have we fallen hopelessly down the rabbit hole?

That being said, there seems to be no question that the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 finale will have potentially devastating consequences — and that aside from the sure-to-be-significant fallout from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

After Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 18, “The Frenemy of My Enemy,” only episode 19 remains before the long-awaited cinematic return of the Avengers on May 1 (in the U.S.) The finale three episodes of the season will take place in the aftermath of whatever it is that Ultron gets up to.

While details are not abundant about what happens next, we do know that Cobie Smulders will (finally!) reprise her role as Maria Hill in an upcoming episode.

As Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 comes to an end, questions remain about whether or not the series will be picked up for a third season. ABC typically announces their renewals in May, and while there is no guarantee, we suspect that intriguing news of a spinoff show suggests that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s prospects are positive.

Note: We incorrectly stated that “The Frenemy of My Enemy” is the final episode before the US release of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Episode 19, “The Dirty Half-Dozen,” will air on April 28 and will immediately precede that film. Thanks to AnakinCorleone for noticing the error.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 18, “The Frenemy of My Enemy,” will air on Tuesday, April 21 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
