Patton Oswalt is returning to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to reveal the secrets of the Koenig brothers.
EW reports that Oswalt will reprise the role of Billy and Sam Koenig in an upcoming episode o Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The episode, titled “Hot Potato Soup,” will air on Jan. 31.
“Patton Oswalt returns as the Koenigs,” showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon explain. In the new episode, “We finally reveal their family secret.”
The immediate question, of course, is whether Oswalt’s return will have anything to do with the show’s current theme of Life Model Decoys. The timing certainly seems fortuitous!
Fans immediately leapt to the LMD conclusion back when the original lanyard-obsessed Eric Koenig was murdered by Grant Ward in season 1. But Oswalt showed up again, playing Eric’s identical brothers Billy and Sam, both of whom are similarly preoccupied by the lanyard thing.
The existence of other brothers has also been hinted at, which casts even more suspicion on the idea that the Koenig brothers came to be in the normal biological way.
Patton Oswalt has appeared on seven episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., most recently at the end of season 2. In his return, it looks like at least one of the Koenig brothers will be channeling Oswalt’s skill as a stand-up comedian.
We’re really hoping for a robot joke.
Long a lingering question on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the concept of LMDs has now taken center stage. Thanks to Dr. Radcliffe’s extremely dubious ambitions, the lines between the mechanical and the human are becoming increasingly blurred.
And with Radcliffe’s true obsession now unveiled, let’s just say we may need the Koenigs and their secrets more than ever.
