The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season premiere is still off in the distance, but the episode title and synopsis finally offer a few hints.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season premiere will be titled “Bouncing Back.”

If that seems like a strangely optimistic title for a show that left us with an episode called “Death,” you’re not alone in that perception. The title may be a reference to Slingshot, a new Inhuman rumored to be joining the cast — and the synopsis for “Bouncing Back” suggests this may be the case.

“In the aftermath of his trip to Maveth,” ABC says, “Coulson is more determined than ever to get to Gideon Malick and put an end to Hydra once and for all.” Meanwhile, “Daisy and the team encounter more Inhumans who have powers like they’ve never seen before, but will they be friends or enemies of S.H.I.E.L.D.?”

Like the title, the synopsis for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season premiere comes across more plucky than dramatic. The issue of budding Inhumans was something of a red herring at the start of season 3, so it’s interesting (but at this point, not terribly gripping) to see the subject raised so prominently. There is also no mention made of the undead elephant in the room — Ward’s Maveth-infested corpse, which is now stalking our planet with unwholesome intentions.

Still, it’s clear that Coulson has a bee in his bonnet in the aftermath of his decision to kill Ward on Maveth, and it’s unlikely to be terribly cheery. And given what the audience knows about Ward, we believe that this particular bee might just turn into — dare we say — a hive?

Though the issues aren’t touched upon by the new synopsis, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season finale will also need to deal with the lingering emotional devastation experienced by Simmons, Fitz, and May.

“Simmons is grieving,” Elizabeth Henstridge recently told IGN. “She knows that Will has not made it back and that he’s gone and that Fitz tried and all that stuff, so she’s in a funky place of trying to get over that. She has some survivor’s guilt, and she’s just so overwhelmed with how amazing Fitz has been throughout the whole process.”

And as for Agent May, Ming-Na Wen suggests that there will be a definite pullback from her character when the series returns.

“There is definitely a transition in May trying to figure out how to not have her emotions, just to keep it in check the way she normally does,” she says. “Because she’s been tapping more and more into her humanity and opening her heart to various situations this past season, I think she wants to continue, but is reluctant to because she feels like perhaps it might be detrimental to her as an agent.”

So whether or not any successful “Bouncing Back” happens in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season premiere, we have absolutely no doubt that the show will have us back in nervous conniptions before very long.

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season premiere airs on Tuesday, March 8 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
