The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season premiere is just around the bend, and we’ve got a few burning questions for “Bouncing Back.”

Is Coulson back as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

In the mid-season finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Mack assumed the role of emergency Director while Coulson went off-book (way, way off-book) to seek revenge on Ward. Mack pulled a Washington and totally rocked the job, and the finale ended before he had time to officially hand the reigns back over to Coulson.

It seems likely that all is back to normal within the hierarchy of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the mid-season premiere — or as normal as things ever get, anyway. But we’re still curious if Coulson has fully embraced his role as Director again. And even if he has… is he really the best man for the job?

What are Hive-Ward’s powers?

“Maveth” was full of shocks and surprises, but the big ticket event was definitely Coulson’s decision to murder Ward on the death planet. The finale made it clear that Coulson is going to be haunted by this decision, but he probably didn’t realize that that was going to be quite so literal. Because Ward’s back, baby.

Okay, no, he’s not really back. But Ward’s body was taken over by the mysterious entity on Maveth — now identified as the comic villain Hive — and we are super curious as to what that means in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Does it have spectacular parasitic, mind-subsuming skillz? Or is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. going to invent a whole new host of horrors for Hive’s new host?

Is Daisy all about the Secret Warriors now?

Daisy Johnson spent the early part of season 2 trying to get the ball rolling on her S.H.I.E.L.D.-sponsored team of Inhumans. The project stalled significantly thanks to tangos with the ATCU, Lash, and Hydra, and Coulson went so far as to dismiss the idea as impractical. But Daisy, Lincoln, and Joey (and Mack) were crucial in pulling off the defeat of Malick’s Hydra forces in “Maveth,” giving Agent Johnson hope that her idea would take root again. With the teased arrival of a new, super-fast Inhuman in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season premiere, we can’t help but wonder if Daisy is going to be all Secret Warriors, all the time.

What’s up with Fitz and Simmons?

Or, to wit: Are Fitz and Simmons kissing on the regular now, or do they totally hate each other again?

The super science kids are in an another awkward position after the finale, because Fitz had to destroy Simmons’ Hive-possesed space-boyfriend Will on Maveth. And it gets better! Fitz and Simmons also had a hell of a kiss before Maveth, so their feelings are literally all over the place. Factor in their impressively bad track record when it comes to communication, and they could be married, not speaking, or already divorced by now. You just never know with FitzSimmons.

How is Agent May — and where is Andrew?

Marvel has an extensive list of characters who Just Need A Break, Already, and Melinda May is working her way to the top with haste. After making the heartbreaking decision to hand Andrew/Lash to the ATCU, May learned that all of her turmoil was for naught; Andrew had really wound up in the custody of Gideon Malick. The finale added another terrible twist — Simmons freed Andrew in a moment of desperation, and Lash immediately murdered a truckload of Inhumans in stasis.

“There is definitely a transition in May trying to figure out how to not have her emotions,” Ming-Na has teased; and no small wonder. But with crises rising and Lash on the loose, we doubt that May will be able to remain emotionless for long.

Are Hunter and Bobbi up to something?

This question is brought to you by a combination of nonspecific (but let’s face it, conditioned) suspicion, and the recent synopsis released for Bobbi and Hunter’s spinoff, Most Wanted. It’s heavily implied that Most Wanted picks up when the two on-again spies are — for unspecified reasons — disgraced, expelled from S.H.I.E.L.D., and forced to go on the run.

While we have no idea what could instigate such a drastic series of events, the question is still a pressing one. Maybe it won’t be quite as bad as we think (…yeah, right) but either way, we’ll keeping our eyes peeled for tricks, deception, and warning signs right from the start of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mid-season premiere.

How are you doing, Lincoln? Are you okay?

Just saying, he looks a little angry. And he’s fighting Carl Creel, which historically hasn’t ended well for agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

But maybe Daisy will kiss it better.
