In a recent interview, Edward James Olmos offers a few hints at his upcoming role on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2.
Olmos, recently cast as “Robert Gonzales,” confessed that he couldn’t give much solid information about his character. “They already told me what not to do,” Olmos joked, presumably referring to Marvel’s notoriously strict policy of secrecy.
Still, the Battlestar Galactica veteran offered a hint or two about his character for fans to chew over.
“I’ll just put it to you this way,” Olmos said. “When he smiles, the whole world smiles with him.”
Somehow, that is less than comforting.
Olmos also confirmed that his storyline on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 will be relatively brief. “They offered me a very great arc, in respect to what it does,” he said. “It’s a short arc. It’s only about between three to five/six shows.”
But Olmos seems enthusiastic about his appearance, regardless of the length. “I love the Marvel world, big time,” the actor commented. “And so I was very honored that they had asked me.”
And however brief his screen time on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Olmos promises that Robert Gonzales will have a significant impact on our increasingly embattled agents.
“I’m working with everyone,” – including Clark Gregg’s Director Coulson, he confirmed. As for the tone of this impact, Olmos suggested that his character’s influence will tilt Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 in an even darker direction.
“Us being there really pushes it up and over,” Olmos said. “The realities are very strong, and storylines are very dark.”
This darkness is part of what drew the acclaimed actor to the series. “That’s what makes Marvel, I think, really quite interesting,” he said. “The heroes all have a flaw, and they all end up pulling through. But you can never tell – they might flip at any moment and become something you weren’t expecting. And I like that.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 11, “Aftershocks,” will air on Tuesday, March 3 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
