As the Marvel Universe gears up for Captain America: Civil War, Clark Gregg tells us where Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s battlefield lies.

Inhumans and their powers have been a source of tension on the series ever since Daisy found herself spritzed by Terrigen Mist, so it’s not surprising that the conflict will continue to escalate. But according to Gregg, the issues of powered people may reach the scale of Captain America’s, ah, little spat with Iron Man.

“The days are coming where we will need to know exactly where everyone who is Inhuman who has crossed our path are, while we sort out if they’re going to be friend or foe,” Gregg says. “That’s our version of Civil War.”

As illustrated by last week’s episode, the top of that friend/foe list wears a familiar face.

“Lash is one of those people we’re going to have to find that out about,” Gregg says — and there may be surprises in store. “Just as a fan of the comics, I feel like anyone who thinks they’re really positive about exactly what Lash is… there’s more dimensions to Lash coming than we’re aware of yet.”

Ming-Na, whose Agent May was previously married to Andrew Garner/Lash, says that her character “is kind of shut down when it comes to Lash and Andrew at this point.”

“That’s why she’s re-focusing all her energy back into S.H.I.E.L.D., back being by Coulson’s side,” she adds. “That’s where she’s most comfortable. That’s where she she can be most effective in contributing her skills to whatever task is at hand and not deal with those emotions that would probably continue to devastate her.”

That said, the actress laughs that, if the story was up to her, “They would just make out!”

Ming-Na also took the humorous route on teasing where May would align in Captain America: Civil War — “Which one’s closer to Thor?” she wondered — but Clark Gregg mused that Director Coulson would have a more difficult choice to make.

“I think the Coulson from some of the earlier films especially would have just been, wherever Steve Rogers goes, I’m gonna be there with my cards, and at some point, I’m gonna get them signed,” he says. “But I think what’s amazing about doing this character for 70 episodes of television, and putting him at the lead of a no-longer-existing S.H.I.E.L.D. that’s hunted around the world is, you get a very different perspective.”

And of course, the Inhumans are central to Coulson’s (and Gregg’s) shifting perspective.

“There are forces in the world who want to exploit those people, and there are forces in the world who want to exterminate those people,” he says, “And here’s Coulson with the person who may be the closest thing he has to family — and she’s one of them. And he’s getting closer to more people like that. And at the same time, some of the most terrifying threats to this person that he cares most about are other Inhumans.”

So what does this mean for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s tie-in with Civil War? Well, no one is talking just yet. But Chloe Bennet was emphatic in assuring us that the fallout of events both in-show and in the wider MCU would be considerable.

“Your pants will be filled with shit when we get done with this season,” she promises.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 3×15, “Spacetime,” airs Tuesday, April 5 at 9:00 p.m on ABC.
