With just one episode to go before the epic 100th episode, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 5×11 delivers a wild journey home.

Ruby Tuesday… er, Friday

“All the Comforts of Home” introduces a new variable into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., in the diminutive form of Ruby Hale (Dove Cameron). But Ruby already has roots in this story. Her mother is none other than Katherine Hale, the subordinate-murdering General we met in episode 5, and the mother/daughter dynamic is worth paying very careful attention to.

It also soon becomes clear that Ruby is less of a known entity than she initially seems to be. My advice? Keep your eyes peeled. There is definitely something this girl doesn’t want us to see.

Mackelena got it going on

FitzSimmons might be the couple officially putting a ring on it, but the events of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 5×11 suggest that Mack and Yo-Yo might not be far behind. In the face of their mind-bending trauma from episode 10 (he saw her killed before his eyes; she spoke to her future self and learned terrible truths) Mack and Elena only grow closer together.

It’s a moving display of love and dedication — with a few moments that will leave your jaw (and something else) on the floor.

Familiar faces and spaces

A reconstructed (or never-deconstructed) Earth isn’t the only familiar sight for the team in “All the Comforts of Home.” Elements and characters from past seasons are slid neatly into the narrative, and they feel like they’ve never even been gone. (In one case, literally.) But don’t get too comfortable — as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. barrels toward its 100th episode, even the friendliest face can hide perilous secrets.

Untethered

Our intrepid agents to can be forgiven for being lulled into an unwarranted sense of security come Friday; returning to your proper place in the space-time continuum can put a rosy glow on anyone’s darkest day. But viewers should not feel as comfortable.

In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 5×11, Team Coulson returns to play a game they think they know, only to find that the rules have entirely changed. The Framework was strange and future-space was wild, but back in the here and now, the stakes are singularly ruthless. Our agents are as isolated and endangered as they have ever been, friendless in a way that recalls the days after S.H.I.E.L.D. first fell back in season one.

There is one upside, though. Stripped of allies and resources, the team has to Team (yes, it’s a verb) as hard as they ever have. And — excuse my corniness — that turns out to be something worth fighting for.

Bonus hint: That’s not your line, lady.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 5×11, “All the Comforts of Home,” airs on Friday, March 2 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
