New images of key cast members hint at a shift toward grimmer days on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2.

Last season of Marvel’s supernatural spy drama could easily have been subtitled “Losing Your Illusions” – and it looks like Team Coulson’s rose-tinted glasses have come off for good.

New images from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 illustrate that Coulson and his crew are tougher and rougher than when we last saw them… but whether or not that’s a good thing remains to be seen.

A recent issue of TV Guide included this image of a weary-looking Coulson seated at an old-fashioned desk.

According to TV Guide, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 will find Team Coulson holed up in an old base from the Scientific Strategic Reserve – the spy organization that eventually became S.H.I.E.L.D.

As the S.S.R. was run by Captain America‘s Peggy Carter, and Peggy will be the subject of this winter’s mini-series Agent Carter, we can only speculate at the exciting connections just waiting to blossom.

As for why now-Director Coulson looks so run down, showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen hinted that some of Coulson’s new position “comes with a whole new set of responsibilities and new decisions that he may have to make.” These new burdens will “effect our characters and the dynamics between them, if they don’t agree with some of the decisions he’s making.”

Another member of Coulson’s crew is definitely making some of her own decisions as well. This new shot from a recent TVLine gallery may give unconvinced fans a whole new perspective on Agent Skye.

Allow us to be the first to fervently murmur, “Whoa.”

Producer Jeffrey Bell emphasizes the difficulty of the team’s predicament. This year, their responsibilities are only magnified – but with the team “on the run and with people gunning for [them],” the job will be that much more difficult.

Bell also promises answers in the premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 on the hot topics of Ward, FitzSimmons, and Skye’s perplexing papa. Since a recent teaser for the season premiere left us with more questions than ever, we can only dance around in gratitude – and set our watches for the show’s return.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 will return at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23 on ABC.
