A new clip from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 3 delves into Ward’s past, as Tim Dekay joins the cast as the traitor’s brother.

Though HYDRA agent Grant Ward did not appear in last night’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it looks like upcoming installments will feature quite a bit of the bearded traitor.

A new clip from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 3, titled “Making Friends and Influencing People,” offers a glimpse at another parlay between Ward and Skye. Skye attempts to get a handle on HYDRA’s methods from her former supervising officer, but the conversation veers off into more personal topics.

In the clip, Skye is incredulous that Ward could have suffered at the hands of his family, who are apparently both respected and loved.

“Every family has its secrets,” Ward replies.

The discussion (such as it is) about Ward’s family life is not idle chatter, as the family is set to play a larger role as the season progresses. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has cast actor Tim Dekay in the role of Senator Maynard Ward – none other than Grant’s big brother. [Edit: According to Marvel, Ward’s brother’s name is Christian.] Dekay, known for his work on White Collar, will first appear in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 6, titled “A Fractured House.”

Keen-eared viewers may perk up at the news that Maynard (seen last season forcing Grant to drown his younger brother) is now a senator. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s reliable adversary Glenn Talbot dropped the suggestion in last night’s episode that he is connected with a wealthy senator eager to hunt down Coulson and the embattled espionage organization.

Coincidence? We think definitely not.

If Christian Ward becomes a significant adversary for our agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where will that leave our own bearded traitor? Is his brother’s baddie-ness Ward’s ticket to redemption… or are there deeper machinations at work?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 3, “Making Friends and Influencing People,” will air on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.

What do you think of the focus on Ward’s past on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ season 2?
