Kyle MacLachlan will join the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 in the role of a central player’s mysteriously gruesome relative.

A smidgen of light was finally cast on the mystery of Skye’s parentage today, when TVLine announced that actor Kyle McLachlan has been cast as Skye’s powerfully mysterious father in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2.

Few details have been released about the specifics of his role, but McLachlan is certainly no stranger to playing roles with plenty of questions attached. The actor is perhaps best known for his role as Agent Dale Cooper on the cult hit Twin Peaks, and has recently appeared on How I Met Your Mother and Believe.

The mystery of Skye’s parents deepened significantly in in the final minutes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s season 1 finale. Offering a brief but intensely creepy glimpse of a shadowy man – or rather, his ravaged arm, dripping with blood – the perpetually enigmatic Raina informed the flaky fellow that she had found his daughter.

Since Skye’s status as an apparently-dormant Object of Unknown Origin remains unexplained, it’s fair to say that that scene totally messed with our heads.

But showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon assured Hypable at San Diego Comic-Con that Skye’s father would be a significant factor in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2.

“We’ll find out who he is,” Tancharoen promised, as Whedon added, “We would be fools if we didn’t explore that story.”

MacLachlan is the latest of several actors announced to join Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2. The additions of Lucy Lawless (Agent Isabelle Hartley), Reed Diamond (HYDRA baddie Daniel Whitehall) and Nick Blood (Lance Hunter) have recently been bolstered by NYPD Blue’s Henry Simmons, who will join the cast as mechanic Alphonso “Mac” Mackenzie. In addition, British actor Simon Kassianides has been cast as a character called Bakshi, a talented right hand man, the character will apparently not be afraid to “do the dirty work.”

And not that we’re sure there’s any connection, but from our brief glimpse at Skye’s father last season, we must assume that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 will involve plenty of dirty work.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 will premiere on September 23, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
