The past comes to life as agents court death in the preview and stills for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 8.

A constellation of guest stars are set to spangle what may be S.H.I.E.L.D.’s darkest hour (so far) in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 8. The episode, titled “The Things We Bury,” will include a significant appearance by Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, in anticipation of the events of her upcoming miniseries.

The Incredible Hulk‘s Lou Ferrigno will also make a cameo appearance, and Whedon alum Dichen Lachman (Dollhouse, The 100) is mysteriously credited as a “young woman.” Will Lachman’s role really be so cursory? Or are seeds being planted for future storylines?

The preview for “The Things We Bury” offers absolutely no clues on these questions, but makes its own suggestion which leaves our stomach in knots.

Could one of our agents really be donning their gear for the last time in next week’s episode? We truly shudder to consider the possibility… so let’s focus on a new sneak peek from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 8 instead.

Make us feel better, Director Coulson.

Ahh, nothing like some quirky Papa Phil to tone down our terror at losing one of the team. It’s especially nice to see Coulson giving Fitz some much-needed firm encouragement – we can only hope that it works.

A second clip from “The Things We Bury,” via IGN, focuses on another other story line – one notably less cheerful. Clever wordplay there may be between Peggy Carter and Daniel Whitehall (still in his Nazi phase as Werner Reinhardt) but no one is joking around.

The still photos from em>Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 8 focus on this conversation, and a confrontation between Ward and his senator brother that seems only slightly less terrifying.

The synopsis for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 8 echoes the promo’s indication that the Obelisk will be a pivotal player in the episode… and suggests that yeah, stuff is getting totally real.

“Coulson and team find themselves in an epic face-off against Hydra to uncover an ancient secret,” ABC says, “While Ward kidnaps his brother, Senator Christian Ward, for a violent trip down memory lane.”

We’d judge, but kidnapping and violence sounds a lot like our last family reunions. Go with your feelings, O Ward Brothers; just put down towels first.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 8, “The Things We Bury,” will air on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
