The pressure rises for Team Coulson as unpredictable elements enter the mix in the preview and stills for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 2.

If you thought Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 2 might bring the show’s pulse down to normal after this week’s pounding premiere, you thought wrong. The episode, tellingly titled, “Heavy is the Head,” will be high-energy and high-stakes — and will introduce a potentially crucial new player into the mix.

The preview for “Heavy is the Head” focuses on the smash-bang portion of next week’s episode, though it also offers a few moments of introspection from Director Coulson.

“Just because you’re Director, doesn’t mean everything’s on you,” May tells Coulson, but he is unconvinced.

“Yes, it does,” he replies.

While it’s nice to see Coulson’s human side resurfacing (he was more like “Cold-son” in the premiere) we can’t help but wonder what inspires him to feel so guilty. Given the action-packed preview, it seems unlikely he is only mourning the loss of Isabelle Hartley.

Oh Izzy, we hardly knew ye.

The still photos for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 2 don’t offer much by way of violence, but they do give us many, many feels thanks to several images of Fitz and his imaginary Simmons. Hartley’s associate Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) also features prominently in the stills, which show us that the mercenary definitely knows how to count to three.

Good for you, Lance.

Interesting as they are, one crucial piece of information is missing from the preview and stills for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 2. Thankfully, the official synopsis fills us in:

“Hunted and running out of solutions, Coulson puts his team right in the line of fire in the hopes of saving them all. But with General Talbot, Hydra and Creel all on the attack, can they possibly survive?”

Good question — but we’re not done.

“Meanwhile,” ABC says, “a mysterious Doctor (Kyle MacLachlan) harbors some dangerous secrets that could destroy one of our core team members.”

If you don’t recall, Kyle McLachlan was cast earlier in the summer in the role of no less a creature than Skye’s father. So for all the bangs, booms, and beautiful boys offered by other promotional material, the role this mysterious man will play is definitely at the front of our minds.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 2, “Heavy is the Head,” will air on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
