The true origin of the mysterious blue aliens has been confirmed by the executive producers of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

Fans have been speculating on the origin of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s oddest inclusion — a dead blue alien — ever since the preserved humanoid was first unveiled in the show’s first season. (Well… half of it, anyway.)

Now, with the midseason finale rapidly approaching, the creative team have come out to confirm what many fans have long suspected: The creature is a Kree.

According to showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon, the alien’s origin will be Kreevealed revealed in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 9. The bearer of this bizarre news will be Raina, the “girl in the flower dress” — something of a mysterKree mystery herself.

Tancharoen points out that Raina has “been told these stories of evolution and destiny,” something Kreequently frequently alluded to by the series. “It’s very much part of her lifelong quest to achieve this goal of hers,” Tancharoen says. “The Kree are a part of the stories she’s heard her whole life.”

Ruth Negga, who plays Raina, adds that her character’s dreams of evolution extend to the whole world.

“These stories that her grandmother has told her promise the arrival of something,” she says. “A change that’s coming that’s been promised for however many years, passed down from generation to generation. The return of something that was once here that will come again and bring about something better, more progressive. I think that’s what the Kree represent for Raina.”

Speaking to TV Guide, Chloe Bennett Kreeased teased Skye’s potential connections to Raina and the alien race.

“You’ll find out that Skye and Raina have something in common — and it’s not that they’re brunettes,” Bennet says. “Some of our überfans think the two of them are aliens. Or maybe they’re something else — something different and special. It’s all leading to a reveal that’s mother-effing crazy.”

Thanks, Chloe – we’re already struggling to Kreel reel in our expectations!

Meanwhile, Jed Whedon also touched on how the Kree — seen in their living incarnation in Guardians of the Galaxy — may continue to link Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. into the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“One of the privileges of this gig is getting a peek behind the curtain at some of the stuff that’s coming up and getting to read scripts early,” he says. “We’re well aware of what the films are planning far ahead, and whenever we can we want to weave in and out of those stories.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 9, “Ye Who Enter Here,” will air on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.

What impact do you think the Kree will have on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’?
