The British black comedy-drama After Life starring comedian Ricky Gervais has been renewed for a third season at Netflix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, Ricky Gervais has signed a multiple-year overall deal with Netflix, which includes a third season renewal for the scripted comedy series After Life, which Gervais created, writes, directs and stars in.

Sources close to the deal report that its value is somewhere in the eight-figure range, and will include Gervais creating a new scripted series for as well as additional stand-up comedy specials for Netflix, in addition to the renewal of After Life.

“I was planning to retire soon and just wander around the house drunk until I die, but I’ve grown a bit tired of doing that during the lockdown, and also Netflix made me an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Gervais said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter

Set in the small fictitious town of Tambury, the comedy-drama series After Life follows Tony, a writer for the local newspaper whose life is upended after his wife dies from cancer.

Season 1 of After Life centered on Tony immediately after the death of his wife.

After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it’s like a Super Power — not caring about himself or anyone else — but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know.

In season 2 of After Life, Tony is still struggling with immense grief for his wife. However, the season now follows Tony as he triesto become a better friend to those around him. Each of the people he knows around him are grappling with their own problems — all of which is only intensified by the looming threat of the local newspaper being shut down.

Season 2 of the show recently on April 24. An episode count and premiere date for season three have not yet been determined.
