AFI (The American Film Institute) has released their lists of the top 10 best films and TV shows from 2012, and not surprisingly there were many crossovers between the lists and Hypable fandoms.

From a Movies standpoint, perhaps the only surprise is the inclusion of The Dark Knight Rises, which, while getting fine critical acclaim and obviously was a big financial success, hasn’t had any awards support so far this year.

Come Oscars time, expect to see a Best Picture nominations list quite similar to the one below. In fact, it’s quite possible to see nine nominations, with The Dark Knight Rises probably the only film unlikely to get a nomination. When looking at the list against Oscar contenders, the only film that appears to be missing is Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master.

Take a look at the movies list below:

AFI Movies of the Year

Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
The Dark Knight Rises
Django Unchained
Les Miserables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Moonrise Kingdom
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty

The TV programs list was absolutely chock full of fandoms we cover here on Hypable, with only Louie and the HBO film Game Change being the outliers. It’s nice to see the diversity that AFI went with in choosing the TV list, as comedies such as Girls and Modern Family are accompanied with heavy dramas like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. They even went with the great American Horror Story and The Walking Dead, which aren’t typically the types of shows to gather attention from the rather conservative AFI.

AFI TV Programs of the Year

American Horror Story
Breaking Bad
Game Change
Game of Thrones
Girls
Homeland
Louie
Mad Men
Modern Family
The Walking Dead

The American Film Institute’s lists are chosen by scholars, film and television artists, critics and AFI Trustees. Apart from the obvious international choices in TV which aren’t eligible for the list, what films and TV shows do you feel are missing from the list? Sound off in the comments!
