In the penultimate issue of Adventures of Supergirl, the truth of Alex’s history with Rampage’s sister is revealed.

Adventures of Supergirl #12 opens in medias res, as Kara faces off against Facet. Facet believes she has removed all of Kara’s ties to Earth; she is holding Eliza Danvers hostage, claims Alex is dead, reminds Kara that her friends at CatCo have been discredited and announces that the DEO has been destroyed.

She claims that Kara Danvers has been purified, leaving only Kara Zor-El behind. Kara, however, knows more than Facet does and attacks.

What Kara knows is that while Rampage, spurred on by the painful sound waves being sent out by Vril Dox, attacked Alex, hurting other DEO agents to get at her for revenge, she did not end up killing Alex. In fact, Alex revealed the truth to Rampage: she did not kill Moyer; in fact, Moyer died saving Alex’s life.

It didn’t look like Alex would get the chance to speak, with Vril Dox enraging her, but Hank (who we know from the television show to be J’onn J’onzz) stopped him, eyes glowing red from the shadows.

Alex revealed that tracking Moyer was her first mission with the DEO. They’d tracked her to an abandoned building that was not structurally sound, and when Alex’s footing crumbled beneath her, she would have tumbled to her death if Moyer hadn’t grabbed her arm, saving her life. Moyer pulled Alex to safety, but the other DEO agents found them then. Misreading the scene, they shot Moyer, killing her.

Alex clearly remains haunted by this event. It was not her fault, but she has clearly taken the blame for Moyer’s death — which just shows the level of her character.

Rampage Caren was heartbroken at this news, but she also let her anger at Alex go upon learning the truth. She tearfully forgave Alex for not revealing the truth to her.

This forgiveness shows Caren’s character as well. Not everyone would simply be able to release the anger and need for vengeance that had driven them for so long. But Caren does, even embracing Alex. It’s a true testament to who she is.

The way this story is playing out is particularly interesting considering Non’s endgame in the season 1 finale. In that story, he activated Myriad, which put humans in the affected area under mind control. Even Superman was affected by it due to him growing up as a human. Kara, as a Kryptonian who grew up on Krypton, was not affected.

Facet’s plan for Kara, to remove everything that anchors her on Earth in order to shape her into the ultimate Kryptonian warrior, reminds me of this in a way since Kara’s enemies are attempting to strip her support systems away from her — though Non wanted to weaken her when she refused to join his side while Facet wants to strengthen her.

One of the main themes we’ve seen in the Supergirl television series is that Kara does not act alone — nor does she want to act alone. She relies on her friends and family to be the best hero she can be. Non recognized this so knew she would be weakened by losing that support network. Facet, on the other hand, shows a distinct misunderstanding of Kara’s character, despite having observed her since her arrival on Earth.

Yes, Kara has that special spark that pushes her to be a hero, but she would not be nearly as successful without Alex, Hank, Winn or James supporting her. She believes in asking for and accepting help when it’s needed, something that comes from her time on Krypton. This sets her apart from many heroes who refuse the help of others.

Facet, in the final issue, will undoubtedly find that threatening Kara’s loved ones — the ones she fights for and alongside — will be the biggest mistake she could have made. While she may be an elite warrior, her understanding of what makes Kara strong is flawed. And I predict Kara will make her regret that.

Adventures of Supergirl #13 will be released Monday, July 11.
