This week, Adele’s blockbuster Grammy-winning hit “Rolling in the Deep” surpassed 8 million digital sales in the US.

It is only the second song to ever do so, following the Black-Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” which surpassed the milestone in June 2012 and is up to 8.4 million copies sold.

The song has been ubiquitous ever since it debuted in late 2010, and it reached the 8 million milestone in two years, 10 months. Of course, sales have slowed down lately – the song passed 7 million in April 2012, so these last million copies have been a steady trickle. Still, 8 million copies sold means that 1 in 40 Americans have bought a digital copy of the song, a number that’s even more impressive considering the rampant piracy in music sales.

To understand how impressive this feat is, consider that only seven songs have ever topped even 7 million in sales. Aside from “I Gotta Feeling” and “Rolling in the Deep,” that number includes: LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” (7.7 million), Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” (7.5 million), Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” (7.2 million), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” (7.1 million), and Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” (7 million).

Congratulations to Adele for having the second-best selling song in digital history! At this rate, perhaps she’ll unseat the Black-Eyed Peas to take the crown one day.

As for Adele’s next album, reports indicate that it won’t be out until some time in 2014.
