It’s looking like *NSYNC can say “bye, bye, bye” to one of their previous album sales records. Adele’s new album, 25, is on track to beat the record for most albums sold in its first week in the United States!

Billboard is reporting that Adele could potentially sell up to 2.5 million copies of 25 in its first week once the final numbers are tallied. According to the same report, 25 sold 900,000 copies in its first day on iTunes alone.

*NSYNC’s album No Strings Attached sold 2.4 million copies in its first week in the United States back in March of 2000. Further, No Strings Attached has remained the only album to sell 2 million copies or more in a single week.

Should 25 sell as predicted, it will become the 20th album to sell at least 1 million copies in a single week since Nielsen started tracking album sales in 1991. It could also surpass Taylor Swift as the biggest album of the year. 1989 has sold 1.7 million copies as of this writing.

In an era of streaming music and video like Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube, this is a considerably huge achievement if Adele can make it happen when the final numbers are released. Streaming music fans were disappointed to find out that Adele’s 25 would not be available on streaming music services just before it was set to be released. However, with staggering numbers like this, we can see why Adele would have wanted to make that choice.

Would Adele have had the same results if she had made her album streaming? It’s possible considering the video for “Hello” has over 452 million views as of this writing. With Adele, it really seems like anything can happen.
