After finally settling down with a solid cast, it was announced over the weekend that Adam Pally will be exiting The Mindy Project in early 2015.

TV Line first reported the news on Friday afternoon that “Pally’s pact with the Fox comedy was always set to expire with this season’s 13th episode.”

He joined the show as Dr. Peter Prentice at the start of season 2 and was quickly upgraded to a regular. Pally is expected to make occasional guest appearances as his schedule permits.

Peter’s story lines as of late have been kind of downtrodden, his bad luck with two women now taking up most of his time during season 3. He has become the confident for Mindy to turn to in navigating her relationship with Danny. The Mindy Project season 3, episode 9, “How to Lose a Mom in Ten Days,” airs tomorrow night, and while there is a new episode next Tuesday, December 2, (episode 10, “What About Peter?”) as well as December 9, (episode 11, “Christmas”) we do assume they will take a short break in December and January for the holidays.

The timing of Pally’s departure seems unfortunately soon, as The Mindy Project season 3, episode 10, “What About Peter?” is largely about him. The synopsis reads:

Mindy is so determined to help Peter with his living situation that her own relationship with Danny gets a little complicated. Meanwhile, things go haywire for Jeremy and Morgan when they’re left alone watching Lauren’s baby boy, Henry, in the all-new “What About Peter?”

Dr. Peter Prentice joined The Mindy Project season 2 after the show fleshed out its main cast over the first two seasons. It originally premiered with a much larger group – there were more assistants (we miss you sometimes Betsy!) and a best friend (Anna Camp) that pulled Mindy out of the office and threw viewers for a confusing loop. Once they established the perimeters of the show – its a ‘rom-sitcom’ based in an office-like setting – they were able to shape the characters to their liking.

What do you think of this news? Will you miss Peter and what he brought to the show?
