Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff and actress Katey Sagal are teaming for an Erin Brockovich inspired drama at ABC.

According to Variety, ABC has given a straight to series order for a brand new drama series titled Rebel.

Rebel hails from Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff, who wrote the pilot for the series and will serve as executive producer on the show alongside Alexander Schmitt. In addition, Brockovich herself is on board to executive produce.

Inspired by the life of consumer advocate and environmental activist, Erin Brockovich, ABC’s Rebel has already found its titular star in Katey Sagal.

Sagal plays Annie “Rebel” Bello in the forthcoming series. A blue-collar legal advocate without a law degree, Annie is described as “a funny, messy, brilliant and fearless woman who cares desperately about the causes she fights for and the people she loves.”

Others set to star opposite Sagal in the upomcing drama include John Corbett as Grady Bello, James Lesure as Benji, Lex Scott Davis as Cassidy, Tamala Jones as Lona, Ariela Barer as Ziggie, Kevin Zegers as Nate, Sam Palladio as Luke, and Andy Garcia as Cruz.

In a statement announcing the series order, president of ABC Entertainment, Katey Burke said: “Erin Brockovich has never stopped the extraordinary work she does fighting for her clients like they’re family, and Krista Vernoff’s take on her life today in Rebel is undeniable.
Katey Sagal is a powerhouse as Rebel and with Andy Garcia, John Corbett and the rest of the phenomenal cast, viewers are going to fall in love with these characters and the world Krista has created for them.”

Rebel is set to premiere on ABC sometime in 2021.
