Bad news for fans of The Middle. ABC has decided to scrap its planned spin-off the show focusing on Sue Heck’s life in Chicago.

ABC’s comedy The Middle ended in May of 2018, but fans of the show took solace in the fact that a spinoff was coming. The spinoff, titled Sue in the City, was reported to focus on eternal optimist Sue Heck and her adventures away from home as a twentysomething living in Chicago and starting her career. The show would star Eden Sher and came from The Middle creators/executive producers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline.

Unfortunately, as Deadline has reported, the show has officially been axed by ABC. Sue Heck was quite the breakout character from The Middle, and with the success of Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish on Freeform (another millennial-focused spinoff ABC passed on), Sue in the City seemed like a no-brainer for the network. Still, the network has decided to not move forward with the show.

ABC does have a solid comedy lineup with its existing shows like Splitting Up Together and The Goldbergs as well as a forthcoming spinoff of The Goldbergs, Schooled. However, this cancellation does seem to be a significant move away from departing ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey’s focus on developing millennial-focused programming.

Deadline does report that there are rumors that Sue in the City is being shopped at Warner Bros., so while ABC might be moving away from millennial shows, other networks still might rescue the spinoff. However, for now, it seems that we’ve seen the last of the Heck family on network television.
