It’s good and bad news, Game of Thrones fans. The long-awaited A Song of Ice and Fire encyclopedia has been delayed because author George R.R. Martin just has too much material.

Anyone who has attempted to get through all five of George R.R. Martin’s massive A Song of Ice and Fire tomes knows that if there’s one thing Martin isn’t afraid of, it’s writing too much.

The Game of Thrones television series does a great job of distilling what is already more than 5,000 pages of story into short 10-episode seasons. But of course, the show barely scratches the surface of the world Martin has created.

This is why fans of both the books and the show have been anxiously awaiting The World of Ice and Fire, the official encyclopedia written by Martin in collaboration with Westeros.org site owners Linda Antonsson and Elio M. García.

The multi-volume epic, which will detail the world and history of Westeros and its surrounding kingdoms, has already been delayed once.

And now, Geekosystem reports that its projected 2014 release date is set to be changed again. The reason? Martin was tasked with writing 50,000 words, but ended up submitting five times this amount.

This extra material includes brand new information about the series, and has caused publisher HarperCollins to reconsider the original encyclopedia format. They have also commissioned more artwork to go along with Martin’s writing.

We suppose this is what you might legitimately call a “fangirl/boy problem.” While we are sad to hear about the delay on The World of Ice and Fire, anything George R.R. Martin wants to share with us about the incredible universe he has created is probably worth waiting for.

What do you think? The more the better? Or perhaps there’s such a thing as too much, even for Martin? Sound off in the comments!
