The season 5 premiere of Scandal brought down royals and politicians alike.

Scandal season 5 premiered Thursday night with a new episode fit for an Evil Queen. Olivia exposed the Queen of Caledonia as a murderer, while VP Sally murdered the privacy Olitz were hoping to hold onto for a few more weeks.

And now, the biggest moments of the Scandal premiere…

1) Princess Emily: The new Princess Diana

At the top of the episode we met Princess Emily, a royal guest of the White House, who spoke to Olivia honestly about being seen as merely a spectacle. She said she gave up being treated like a human when she married the Prince.

Such is the case in the real world. In fact, the season 5 premiere was clearly inspired by Princess Diana’s tragic accident in 1997. Like Di, Emily’s car crashed in a tunnel, and in a scene that took on issues with the paparazzi, photographers quickly swarmed her dead body. Olivia arrived at the scene and threw her expensive coat over Dead Emily, but not before lots of pictures were taken.

In light of the paparazzi attack, the Queen and Prince (who were also visiting America) tasked Olivia with paying off all the photographers to not release their photos. Little did we know that the queen had more reasons than one to get rid of the pictures — she had a role to play in her daughter’s murder.

They’re able to scrub all of the photos except for those taken by two photographers. To prevent any issues from surfacing, Olivia decided to get a photo taken of the prince observing the princess’ body in the hospital. (Did anyone else think Olivia was about to ask the queen or prince to leak some nude pics of themselves to distract everyone? That was my guess.)

2) Fitz handed Mellie the divorce papers

After four full seasons of hooking up with Olivia, Fitz decided to divorce his wife and commit to Miss Pope.

Mellie didn’t accept the idea and went to Cyrus for help. She told him they needed to stay married for any of their careers to survive, but Cyrus had no interest in assisting.

Olitz’s plan isn’t without problems, however. The couple sparred over what to do about the murder of the princess, and later in the episode…

3) Fitz wanted to go public

“I don’t want to wait,” Fitz told Olivia, reminding her that life is short and you can die in a car crash at any moment.

But Olivia wasn’t so quick to agree to going public. She thought it’d only make things worse between them because they barely have their relationship figured out as it stands. Her idea, as always, was smart: Don’t go public until their relationship is in better shape.

Fitz agreed to the idea, and while it seemed like a smart plan before Sally exposed them, we have to wonder if their relationship would’ve ever improved.

4) The queen killed the princess

Turns out the princess was having an affair with the body guard… and she was pregnant with his baby. Olivia brought the findings to the queen, who ordered that there be no investigation. Why? She killed her own daughter because she wanted their bloodline to remain pure. There would be no security guard’s baby becoming a prince!

Olivia vowed she’d get justice, but Olivia Pope got Olivia Pope’d: The queen reminded her she signed a non-disclosure ensuring nothing she learned interfere with U.S./Caledonia relations.

But as always, Olivia wouldn’t be out-Pope’d. She went to the prince, who didn’t sign an NDA, and he vowed to take his mother down. Justice!

5) Huck begged for help, and Jake returned

Huck was still broken over not being able to see his son. Strangely — or maybe not so strangely by Huck standards — he’d been spending his time in Olivia’s house waiting for her to return. “I don’t know how to fix you. I wish I did,” said Olivia to Huck in one of the most emotional moments of the episode. “You need a much better plan than me.”

Olivia returned home the next day to find Huck had left. Viewers quickly learned he went to Jake for help. Good thing, too, because Jake has no other purpose on the show at this point. Remember: He decided to step down as Olivia’s guardian angel at the end of season 4, and apparently he was serious about it.

6) The finale: Code 5!

Unfortunately, Olitz won’t be able to take things slow after all. Sally discovered photos of Olivia lurking around the White House and smiling pretty at Fitz, essentially proving that they’re together. As previews for next week show, Olivia is dealing with the worst scandal possible.

Sally’s findings caught Cyrus’ attention, so we expect he’ll be back in the fold to help manage the crisis as well.

What did you think of the ‘Scandal’ season 5 premiere?

Notably, Mama and Papa Pope were completely absent from the episode. We wonder how long it’ll be until they’re back? Rowan can’t stay in his jail cell forever!
